English Water Pollution Essay

The Worldwide Problem: Water Pollution

Written By Kody Davison

What is Water Pollution in New Zealand and  why is it such a big problem?

Water Pollution is a major global problem. Water pollution is the contamination of water, usually as a result of human activities. Water bodies include for example lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater. This water can be released into natural water bodies, this can lead to public health problems for people living downstream. They may use the same polluted river water for drinking, bathing or irrigation. In New Zealand in particular agriculture is a big portion of the money income. Cattle are spread widely across New Zealand including near water bodies. As well as the methane from the cattle, the urine of the cattle contains high levels of nitrogen. When they urinate on the paddock, it's too much nitrogen for the grass to be able to benefit from so it seeps down into the groundwater, which then makes its way to the streams, rivers and lakes.

There are many ways to help stop pollution!

DO NOT pour fat from cooking or any other type of fat, oil, or grease down the sink.

DO NOT dispose of household chemicals or cleaning products down the sink or toilet.

DO NOT flush pills, liquid or powder medications or drugs down the toilet.

Avoid using the toilet as a bin. Most tissues, wrappers, and other paper products should be properly taken care of in a bin.

DO NOT dispose of these chemicals, motor oil, or other car fluids into the sanitary sewer or storm sewer systems. Both of them end at the river.

Preventing water pollution and conserving water are important to keep a continuing amount of water that is safe to use for ourselves and future generations. With such a low percentage of the earth's water being drinkable (3%) it is very essential to keep water clean and healthy for us humans and wildlife alike to drink.

I learned that water is the most valuable resource this earth has and is quickly becoming very hard to get, if we don’t change this soon then the world as we know it will most likely be over. There are simple ways to fix this problem as I learned and I am going to use my knowledge to the best of my ability to help this cause and fight against water pollution.
